Technique Talk: Meet Neal Giles

Let’s get to know Neal Giles from the Melbourne Frontrunners, Melbourne’s gay and lesbian running and walking club.

How did you become involved with the Frontrunners?

“Moving to Melbourne a number of years ago now from the UK I was seeking an opportunity to keep fit and meet new people so I headed along to a Melbourne Frontrunners training session on the first Saturday after I had landed. The warm welcome had me hooked and here I am now turning up most weeks for a run and a coffee catch up afterwards.”

What is your personal aim this season?

“This season it is all about getting back into fitness. Trying so slowly improve lap times which will enable me to get back into some fun runs in 2016.”

What is your favourite position in a group run?

“Well as I am not the fastest runner my usual position is towards the back of the pack. That’s no worry as I have plenty of company and motivating voices to keep me going as I train around the tan. Plus we all know that the tan provides a great opportunity to work out our eyes.”

What training drill do you dread the most?

“We have recently had the fantastic Aline come along to coach us at the club and I have to say some of the drills she has made us do have been pretty scary. Whilst you may not enjoy partaking in them at the time I have to admit that generally the pain following has been limited.

Hill runs and sprint circuits have been dreaded but the coffee after feels so much more deserved.”

What has been your biggest achievement with the Frontrunners?

“Running my first half marathon and then City2Sea just 4 weeks later is my biggest achievement with the club. The first half was a huge achievement for me and a couple of other runners who helped me along the route.”

Why would you suggest people get involved with the Frontrunners?

“Melbourne Frontrunners is a great club with a positive social atmosphere which makes it a welcoming place for all abilities. Check out our website and come along on a Saturday morning to find out more.”
